An affix is a string of sounds that is attached to the beginning or end (and in some languages in the middle) of a word. English and Gaelic have prefixes which come before the root or stem of a word, such as re- in English (as in reword) or mi in Gaelic. They also have suffixes which follow the root, such as the English plural -s or the Gaelic plural -an.
