Assimilation (definition)

Assimilation is a phonological process in which a sound becomes more similar to some other sound in its environment. For example, the alveolar consonant [n] in the middle of the English word 'bonbon' might be pronounced more like the bilabial consonant [m], because that makes it more similar to its neighbor [b], which is bilabial.
