Embedded Clause (definition)

Definition
An 'embedded clause' (also sometimes referred to as a 'subordinate clause' or 'dependent clause', although not entirely synonymous) is present in a complex sentence, where there are multiple clauses. Each clause must have a predicate and subject (not necessarily overt) while expressing a proposition. The clause that is subordinate is the one which would be ungrammatical if taken out of the complex sentence and used as a simple sentence. Consequently, the subordinate clause often acts as an adverb or adjective but can also function as a noun.
