Linguistics is the scientific study of language. The field of linguistics can be mostly separated into several different "core" fields: syntax, semantics, morphology, and phonology and phonetics and several "interface" fields such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, language acquisition, graphemics and others.
