Gaelic (disambiguation)
From Scottish Gaelic Grammar Wiki
In English, Gaelic typically refers to one of the three languages:
- Scottish Gaelic (when pronounced [gɑlɪk])
- Modern Irish (when pronounced [gejlɪk])
- Manx Gaelic
In order to distinguish these linguists, and speakers of the language typically reserve Gaelic for Scottish Gaelic, and refer to Modern Irish as Irish and Manx Gaelic as Manx. Scottish Gaelic (sometimes also Scots Gaelic) is never referred to as "Scottish" or "Scots". "Scots" refers to the Germanic varieties spoken in the lowlands of Scotland and Northern Ireland and is unrelated to Gaelic except through language contact.
Less accurately it is sometimes used to refer to other Celtic languages such as Modern Welsh
