Phonetics is the study of speech sounds. It is usually separated into three subfields of study:
- articulatory phonetics, which involves the physics of and movements within the vocal tract;
- acoustic phonetics, which involves the analysis and breakdown of the physical properties of the speech stream; and
- auditory phonetics, which involves the perception and processing of the speech stream.
