Alveolar (definition)

An alveolar consonant is a sound made by the tongue touching the alveolar ridge, the bony ridge behind the upper teeth and in front of the palate.

• the alveolar consonants of English are [t, d, s, z, l, ɹ, n]
• the alveolar consonants of Gaelic are [n, s, l, r, ɾ]
