Pronoun (definition)

A pronoun is a closed class word that is used in place of a noun when the referent is known either by context or by previous mention. For example, if we hear the sentence "John left", followed by the sentence He hates Swedish Films, the word "he is a pronoun as it refers back to the previous mention of John.
