Frontness may be used to describe where in the mouth a sound is articulated. In English front vowels include [i,e,ɛ,æ,a]. Front consonants are those made at the alveolar, labial and dental places of articulation. The opposite of front is (obviously) back. The back vowels of English are [u, ʊ, o, ɔ, ɑ]. Back consonants include the velars, uvulars, pharyngeals and glottals
